Community Development Initiatives in Haiti

Our Approach Makes Us Different

The Haïti Restoration & Transformation Project

The Haïti Restoration & Transformation Project (HRTP) operates on this fundamental principle: you cannot transform what you have not restored. For those of us engaged in this endeavor, it holds personal significance because it goes beyond being just another project. It’s about restoring dignity to individuals who have experienced pain, marginalization, and broken promises.

This is about Restoring Dignity.
The primary objective is to create self-sufficient communities in Haïti, achieved through collaborative efforts with the local peasant associations. The people in these communities understand their needs best. By partnering to address their self-identified needs, we support them in their restoration as they become self-reliant, leading to profound transformations.

To accomplish this goal, we have identified several key components that together form a comprehensive framework. The first major undertaking involves addressing infrastructure needs. Haïti has faced systemic challenges since gaining independence in 1804, and while we could delve into the reasons for its current state, our focus lies in the present and how to progress forward.

Historically, Haïti has struggled to repay loans imposed on the country by France and other countries, leading to severe financial strains with a ripple effect on Haïti and its citizens. This has resulted in incomplete infrastructure development, particularly in remote regions and mountainsides. Many residents lack access to essential resources like clean water and primary education. However, contrary to misconceptions, these communities do not seek handouts or wish to relocate; rather, they yearn for opportunities to create and maintain their communities basic needs: water, health, education, environmental stabilization, and economic development. That’s where Community2Community (C2C) offers collaboration. Working closely with the peasant associations’ leadership, C2C facilitates the acquisition of human and financial resources to support these communities to become self-sufficient.

The C2C Haïti Restoration & Transformation Project

The Haïti Restoration & Transformation Project is the catalyst for a transformed Haïti. C2C’s mission is to work with the peasant association leaders, helping them ensure that their communities are empowered and self-sufficient so families can thrive now and for generations to come.

Continuous Care Initiative

We implemented preventive measures to address basic and specific health concerns and disease outbreaks and provided training to community members, empowering them to take proactive steps to safeguard their well-being.

Education Initiative

Quality education remains key to Haïti’s social and economic development. The Saul Louis Community School, supported by our Mountainside Partner Peasant Association, APHD, has been functioning as the sole elementary school from pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade. APHD added a trade school in 2022. Currently, they are adding 7th, 8th and 9th grades.

Environmental Stabilization Initiative

Our Mountainside Partner Community planted 14,000 seedlings to promote agricultural development, encouraging sustainable farming practices and helping to enhance food security by purchasing and providing goats to families for milk, meat and market within the communities. This planting also ensured the beginning stages of a reforested mountainside as well as protect community water sources.

Infrastructure / Economic Development Initiative

Quality education remains key to Haïti’s social and economic development. The Saul Louis Community School, supported by our Mountainside Partner Peasant Association, APHD, has been functioning as the sole elementary school from pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade. Emergency Preparedness Initiative

Aims to equip the Partner Communities to effectively respond to emergencies and disasters, fostering confidence and enabling them to take greater control over their communities’ health and wellness outcomes. To date, this initiative has enabled the Peasant Association leaders to combat Covid-19 and the most recent cholera outbreak.
